Alexander Weiss is a Berlin-based visual artist whose practice has been shaped by extended periods of travel and research in New York, Marseille, Bogotá, Caracas and by a year living in the Venezuelan rainforest. Living and working within profoundly different cultural, social and geographical contexts has fundamentally influenced the philosophical foundations of his practice, challenging fixed perspectives and reinforcing an understanding of perception as something that is always contingent, situated and open to revision.
Painting has remained the constant throughout these experiences. Rather than approaching it as a stable or inherited medium, Weiss understands painting as a critical field through which to engage with the world and to examine the conditions through which perception, material and representation take shape. Working primarily with chalk, clay, oil, acrylic on canvas he develops surfaces in which the behaviour and resistance of materials actively influence the direction of the work.
The movement between different places, cultures and systems of thought has become inseparable from his understanding of painting itself. Rather than serving as a vehicle for illustrating predetermined ideas, painting offers a space in which material, perception and lived experience continually inform and reshape one another.
